Savings vs quality time

Remember when I said that new job was complicated, well, it’s complicated as trying to make a cat say “aw aw”. Okay that’s a lame comparison but I can’t think of anything else.

Accepting the offer means that we have to move closer to NYC which means breaking our lease on the current apartment. The terms of the lease here and in any other apartments in NJ is out of this world! Get this, you have to pay $350 for breaking your lease, on top of that you have to pay for the monthly rent until such time that another tenant re-occupies your space. It could take months for that and our rental fee is no joke.

Now, Yiek has an officemate who is interested but she cannot commit yet. I’ll be starting on Dec 3rd so that would mean that we have to move ASAP. Yiek asked me if I can sacrifice 5-8 weeks of staying here in our apartment. I broke down and said NO WAY you are asking too much. Doing that would mean that I have to be at the train station at 6:00 AM and go home around 7:00-8:00 PM (the train can and will be delayed so I am being realistic here). This means that when I prepare for I work, Caleb is sleeping and when I get home he is already or will be preparing for his bedtime (bedtime is 7-7:30PM).  That means that I’ll be seeing him ONLY on weekends. Now, I’ve thought of all the overseas Mommies out there, those Mommies on business trips, I’ve seen how the baby is distant to them. Yiek has an officemate where she was assigned on 3-4 months BT here, her son is now with her here in the U.S. but will rather go with the Daddy than with her. I DON’T want that. Also, Caleb will be in daycare and well, not moving would mean that he would to another daycare closer to where we live. He is  still adjusting if I switch him to another daycare, I fear that his adjustment period would be twice as much.

Is 1 month’s worth of rent savings worth it vs having more time with my son? Do I just treat the money lost as emotional and security investment?

Pre-Black Friday 2008

Wee! I just received an email for the Black Friday ad of Walmart, our favorite store because it is so much cheaper than others. Here is a link of the ad scan. On my must-get list is the $49 portable dvd for Caleb, this is essential for our car trips since he hates to be strapped in his car seat. I am also eyeing a few toys for Caleb i.e. Fisher Price piano as his christmas gift/bday gift, playdoh and other toys for my cousins.

The Kitchen-Aid mixer is the cheapest that I’ve found but I’m not sure, its $130 and I don’t have that kind of money to spare with all the coming expenses (christmas and Caleb’s bday) and me being jobless and all besides I’m too lazy to bake. Hmmm… ennee meenne miny moo you want pandesal or not!

There are also some hoodies, pants that are dirt cheap so I’m getting those too. I haven’t scanned other store’s ads so I don’t know if they also have good deals. I just hope I remember to set the alarm clock this time, last year we woke up 9:00, harharhar!

An update at last!

I know, I know I haven’t been updating bad, bad blogger. My hands are full with our little stinker who likes to pull my hair, bite me ’til I forget my name, if only there is a “bantay mommy”, I’ll report Caleb for all the physical abuse that he has done to me *buu huu*.

Well, it’s been more than 3 months since I started job hunting and I only got one interview, imagine that! Bad, bad economy and bad timing for job hunting. My last interview was last Monday and it was at NYC. It took me 2 1/2 hours to get to the darn place because I got lost (what’s new!) and another 3 hours+ to get back because I missed the train and I was so jologs I didn’t know which platform to get to. Our place is sooo far from NYC but I need a job so there I swallowed my kaartehan and appeared for the interview, an interview which I don’t know if I passed or not. Still no updates up ’til now, they are doing a background and criminal check and they must have found out that I shop lifted $1 books. Just kidding! Those unpaid $1 books were purely unintentional, we only noticed that we placed it in the stroller when we got home. Anyway, I’m proud of Yiek for taking care of Caleb on the 6 hours+ that I was away from home. It was his first time to be in Daddy Day Care and he survived with flying colors although he had trauma changing Caleb’s soiled nappies. Up to now, he keeps on telling me “murag nalibang si Caleb” even if the nappy is fresh!

We went again to Swiss Army sale last week and got really, really great deals. Yiek was very happy with his $50 jacket (retail price 500+) and I got slacks for only $10(retail price 100+). So we were two make that three happy camper as Caleb had fun looking at the myriad of people and items.

Grocery is my weakness as what I always tell Ria, I always get carried away picking food and planning meals which I rarely even cook. Last Tuesday night, it was so cold (negative temperature) that I forgot one of the shopping bag at the counter or cart in my hurry to get home. I went back to the local grocery store the next day and they told me to pick the lost items, no charge. Oh wow! I really, really like the costumer service here!

I promise to have more updates, I’ve missed a lot already and it is always fun to back-read. I know, I know there my updates are all over the place when have I ever been a stickler for one topic ey? O cge, kay gakitkit na sa blinds akong anak.
